Louis St. Laurent Building

The National Printing Bureau and Heating Plant, by Ernest Cormier, is a Classified Federal Heritage Building because of its historical associations, and its architectural and environmental values.

State of the Art Acoustik investigated noise and vibration in the vibration test facility for the Department of National Defense, who currently occupy the building. There had been an accident of a motor vehicle being tested due to very high noise in the facility due to HVAC sources, which impeded voice communication and alert. We evaluated the noise in the current condition and determined that there were multiple sources which caused excessive noise levels which varied across the floor area of this large laboratory. The sources included large unsilenced return fans, exhaust fans and air handling units. We designed three solutions at various cost levels to mitigate the noise including the optimal solution; the construction of a new mechanical room inside the laboratory with the relocation of the noisiest fans and silencing.
